Lowell MA: Incident Prompts Closure of Pawtucket Street Bridge Over Pawtucket Canal

LOWELL - On the morning of Monday, February 10, a sizeable structural component fell from the 

Pawtucket Street Bridge over the Pawtucket Canal. No one was injured in the incident. 

Following the collapse of the roughly 80' concrete strip, an immediate decision was made to close the bridge to all vehicular traffic to allow Department of Transportation (MassDOT) bridge inspectors to assess the condition of the bridge. In the course of their assessment, MassDOT inspectors identified several additional structural deficiencies and determined that the bridge shall remain closed.

The City of Lowell is awaiting a full report from the inspection, but anticipates that the bridge will 

remain closed to traffic in both directions for the foreseeable future. Residents and commuters are advised delays in the area and should be prepared to follow detoured routes. The bridge will remain open to pedestrian traffic.

The Pawtucket Street Bridge is among the six canal bridges being replaced in the City and has been 

under construction and closed to traffic in the eastbound (inbound) direction since May of 2019.

Lowell MA: Reports of a missing female student who left Justus C. Richardson Middle School in Dracut on foot today and has not returned home. Her name is Alexis. She has dirty blonde hair, black hoodie and white Crocs. She was last seen at around 5:45 pm at the Subway on Lakeview Ave in Dracut. Bedford Police Continue Search for Missing Woman with Dementia

BEDFORD— Chief Robert Bongiorno reports that the Bedford Police Department continues to search for a Pennsylvania woman with dementia who was reported missing yesterday.

Joyce Miller, 71, of Pennsylvania was reported missing to Bedford Police on Saturday at approximately 6 p.m. She was attending a function on Great Road in Bedford and left between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., driving a sky blue, 2013 Toyota Prius with a roof rack bearing a Pennsylvania registration, and is not familiar with the area. 

Miller is described as a 5 foot, 5 inch, 150 pound woman, with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a multi-colored vest, orange turtleneck and black pants.

Anyone with information about Miller's whereabouts is asked to contact the Bedford Police Department at 781-275-1212.

Fallen officer laid to rest in Lowell

Hundreds of police officers file into the Immaculate Conception Church in Lowell Friday evening to pay their respects to local native Officer Katherine “Katie” Thyne, who lost her life on duty with police in Newport News, Virginia last week. Thyne will be buried next to her father in the Lowell Cemetery on Saturday morning.
